2013 S.S. Gairsoppa Silver Coin – 1/4 oz .999 Fine Silver Commemorative Coin
This fascinating 1/4 oz. silver coin is crafted from the recovered silver of the British ship S.S. Gairsoppa, which was sunk by German forces in 1941 while en route from Bombay, India to Great Britain. A portion of her silver cargo was salvaged in 2013 and 2014 by a United States recovery company. The coin measures approximately 22 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick at the rim. It bears the markings “1/4 OZ.” and “50 PENCE”. Minted in 2013, this coin marked the first year these unique pieces became available for purchase. The edge of the coin features an engraved inscription: “GAIRSOPPA”.
